According to The Athletic, Leipzig is stepping up negotiations with Chelsea on Nkunku's transfer.
The two sides are discussing a permanent transaction, and Nkunku is open to returning to his old club and tends to transfer permanently.
As informal talks about Simmons' transfer to Chelsea are still continuing, Leipzig has had previous contact with Chelsea.
Bayern also negotiated with Chelsea on Nkunku's transfer this summer. However, TA reported today that players and clubs want to reach a permanent transfer rather than loan, which is currently becoming a barrier to transfer.
At this stage, the deal for Nkunku to return to Leipzig is not close to being reached, and the striker still has other options to consider. TA reported in November last year that Nkunku was dissatisfied with his situation at the club.
Currently, he has become the inquiry target for many clubs in the Bundesliga, Premier League and Serie A. Chelsea priced the French international by 50 million euros, and in January the team asked him for as much as 65 million pounds.
Nkunku joined Chelsea from Leipzig in the summer of 2023, and the contract lasted until 2029. Last season, he played 42 times in various competitions and scored 14 goals, but only started nine times in the Premier League.
Since joining Leipzig from Paris in 2019, Nkunku has played for four years, scoring 70 goals for Leipzig 172 times and winning the German Cup twice. He was named the Bundesliga player in the 2021-2022 season and tied for the league's top scorer with 16 goals in the following season.
