Chelsea midfielder Andre Santos, who is playing in the World Cup with Brazil, was interviewed and talked about his experience in playing football in Europe.
Note: Santos was signed by Chelsea in early 2023, and then he was loaned back to Vascoda Gama for the loan period until June of that year. In the summer of 2023, he went to England to participate in pre-season training with Chelsea, but failed to stay. He was loaned to Nottingham Forest and Strasbourg in the following two seasons. Santos performed well in Strasbourg last season, recalled by Chelsea this season and was selected for the Brazilian national team.
About my situation when I first arrived in Chelsea in 2023
I was too young in 2023. I participated in Chelsea's preseason training camp that summer, which was a realistic impact on me. After I got home, I even felt that I could not play football - because the intensity and rhythm of the game there were very different from what I was familiar with in Brazil before. Although I performed well in the preseason, I finally chose to leave the team on loan. Unfortunately, I didn’t get much chance to play during my loan at Nottingham Forest. Those days were hard, but they also made me much more mature.
Almost every Brazilian player who lands in Europe early will go through a difficult period. I think that for me, that period was mainly a process of adapting to the rhythm of European football. I try to keep a clear head no matter which team I am on. I think about two or three months later, when you get used to the pace of the Premier League, things will change - you will suddenly get enlightened and start to truly show your potential. Now, I feel like I'm fully accustomed to it.
About my experience in Strasbourg last season
I had a great time in Strasbourg, and the coaching staff, teammates and fans made me feel the sense of belonging. It was an excellent season, the best season of my life, and my first full season in Europe. I scored a goal, lived a happy life, and was successfully selected for the national team. And while in France, I also received full support from Chelsea. They (Chelsea) told me clearly that I was on loan to Strasbourg for more game time. Every two months, Chelsea would come to France to see me, and scouts and club executives often sent me messages. This frequent communication makes me feel like I am still part of the team’s plan.
What I feel about being selected as a Brazilian team by Ancelotti
My experience in Brazil's national youth teams at all levels has been very smooth since I was a child. Now that I can be selected as an adult national team, I have finally realized one of my dreams. I know very well that the World Cup is getting closer and closer, so I have to stay focused and perform perfectly at Chelsea in order to be qualified to participate in the World Cup with Brazil - You know, participating in the World Cup is my biggest dream.
