Arm today (10th) announced the launch of the new Arm Lumex™ Compute Subsystem (simplified CSS) platform, an advanced computing platform designed to accelerate its artificial intelligence (AI) experience for flagship smartphones and next-generation personal computers.
Arm said that the Lumex CSS platform integrates the highest-performance Arm CPU, GPU and system IP with the second-generation extended matrix extension instruction set 2 (SME2) technology, not only helps ecosystem partners to bring AI devices to the market faster, but also supports a variety of rich experiences such as desktop mobile games, real-time translation, smart assistants and personalized applications.
Arm Senior Vice President and General Manager of Final Products Department Chris Bergey pointed out that AI is no longer just a technical feature, it has become the foundation of next-generation mobile and consumer technology. With the Arm Lumex platform, the company will continue to improve device-side AI experience to meet users' growing needs and expectations. To this end, Arm is actively expanding SME2 technology to every CPU platform. It is expected that by 2030, SME and SME2 technology will add more than 1 billion TOPS of computing power to more than 3 billion devices, bringing an index increase to device-side AI performance.
Arm pointed out that partners can flexibly choose to use Arm Lumex to create system single chips (SoCs) for them. For example, directly adopt the platform provided by Arm and use advanced physical solutions customized for their needs to achieve dual advantages such as shortening product launch time and fast performance value; or configure the hardware description language original code (RTL) design based on their target market and complete the hardening of the core module by yourself.
Arm said that the new Arm CPU's flight in AI computing capabilities has made real-time device-side AI recommendations real, bringing users a more streamlined and faster physical experience in many interactive scenarios such as audio generation, computer vision and situational assistants.
Powered by SME2 technology CPUs to help achieve full-scene AI accelerationIn the actual situation, SME2 technology improves response speed and operation efficiency to a new level. For example, in the "Smart Yoga Instruction" demonstration application, benefiting from SME2 technology, the text voice generation speed of the application is increased by 2.4 times, which means that the user can obtain posture reversal and guidance immediately, and does not have to worry about the device's battery sustainability problem throughout the process. In addition, through the tripartite cooperation between Arm, Payment Bag and vivo, the interactive response time of Big Language Model (LLM) is shortened by up to 40%, fully confirming that SME2 can bring faster real-time generation AI experience to the terminal devices.
The value of SME2 technology is not only due to the increase in speed, but also the release of AI driver functions that traditional CPUs cannot provide. For example, using the Nerve Photographer noise reduction function on a single core equipped with SME2 can achieve a frame rate of more than 120 frames per second (fps) at 1080P resolution, or a frame rate of 30fps at 4K resolution. This allows smartphone users to capture sharper and clearer images even in the darkest scenes in their bodies, thereby gaining more fluid interactive operations and richer user experience on daily devices.
Unlike cloud-leading AI, which is challenged by delays, cost and privacy issues, Lumex introduces intelligence into the device, enabling faster, safer, and available smart experience locally. SME2 has been widely adopted by leading bio-related partners in the industry, including Alibaba, Paybao, Samsung System LSI, Teng and vivo.
Arm Lumex provides partners with sufficient freedom to achieve a flexible balance between peak performance, sustained energy efficiency and chip surfaces from high-level smartphones, PCs to new AI-first devices.
With the cumulative chip shipment volume with Arm GPUs exceeding 1.2 billion, Arm continues to be at the core of mobile game experience. The new Arm Mali G1-Ultra GPU further breaks through the performance limits of mobile games and brings realistic and host-level graphics to mobile gamers. This breakthrough benefited from the new second-generation Ray Tracing Unit v2, RTUv2 technology, which significantly improved the lighting, shadow and reflection effects, making its optical tracking performance twice as high as its previous generation. In terms of AI workload, Mali G1-Ultra can improve recommendation performance by up to 20%, clearly enhancing the response speed of various real-time applications.
Arm pointed out that Lumex is not only Arm's most advanced CSS platform for the consumer computing market, but also the foundation for opening up a new era of smart AI experience. Whether it is an OEM manufacturer or a developer, Lumex can provide the tools needed to help its application scenarios on the key device side achieve a personalized, privacy guarantee and high-performance AI experience. As a platform dedicated to the AI era, Arm Lumex will become a new starting point for future mobile innovation.
